Another quick thought on healthcare
on Aug 17 in health care tagged by Trevor HicksIf we are to increase the amount of health care that is provided to the poor under whatever reform comes through, who is going to provide this care? Do any of you ever get the feeling that your doctors have a lot of free time when you pay them a visit? This reform will presumably add a lot more demand into the system, but I haven’t seen any proposals put forth about increasing supply. On basic principles we should expect longer waits, higher prices or both.
Personally I think we have over-fetishized the “MD” degree and have overly strict medical licensing requirements. A lot of the basic care that will do the most good for the un- and under-insured could be provided competently and inexpensively by nurses or nurse practitioners in small clinics attached to pharmacies if it were legal to do so. I would think “Wal-Mart” care is better than none.
